Paraguayan harpist and composer Juanjo Corbalán is a pioneering ambassador for the Paraguayan harp. He learned to play the instrument at the age of eight thanks to his brother Sixto and later studied with harp virtuoso Nicolás Caballero and jazz teacher Carlos Shvartzman. With his ensemble, the Juanjo Corbalán Quartet, he explores the boundaries between traditional Paraguayan music, Guaraní songs, Latin American roots and jazz. He composes and arranges original pieces that weave free improvisations together with folk melodies, and his group has performed at festivals such as Festival Mundial del Arpa, AsuJazz and Jazz al Este. Corbalán has won various awards, including at the Festival del Takuare’đã and a composition competition with his piece “Disturbios”. With his band he brings a lively, contemporary sound that casts the harp in a new light.
